From Lifelong Friend to Founding Volunteer

Karen is a naturally private person, but her passion for Brightstar Community inspired her to share her story.

KarenH_Brightstar Volunteer Spotlight_June25-1Growing up, Karen moved frequently before settling in Rochester, NY, where she met Sue Kirby, Brightstar’s founder and Executive Director. Living on the same street and attending the same school, the two became fast friends.

Today, Karen works as an academic advisor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, is happily married, and enjoys spending time with her two children and adorable granddaughter.

Commitment to Brightstar

Karen has been involved with Brightstar since day one. Connected through her friendship with Sue, she was inspired by Sue’s vision to create a safe and supportive home for women survivors of sex trafficking.

She was one of the first board members and played a critical role in helping Brightstar reach critical early milestones, including obtaining its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.

Since those early days, Karen has been heavily involved in event planning, fundraising, volunteer management, and lending a hand wherever needed.

Favorite Brightstar memory

One of Karen’s favorite memories from volunteering was the moment Brightstar acquired its first community house, Lisa's House, bringing to life the vision of providing a home that would enable women to focus on healing.

Over the years her involvement with Brightstar has empowered her to learn about human trafficking and spread awareness to the community. Karen's proudest achievement comes from coordinating donations for the gala through auctions.
